Prepare for Christmas! Nine Lessons and Carols in Hallgrimskirkja, Sunday, December 1st, 2019 2 pm. Ministers: Irma Sjöfn Óskarsdóttir and Bjarni Þór Bjarnason. Readers from Canada, Great Britain, USA and Iceland. Members from the Hallgrímskirkja Motet Choir. Organist and Conductor: Björn Steinar Sólbergsson.
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918 at Kings College, Cambridge. A revision of the Order of Service was made in 1919, involving rearrangement of the lessons, and from that date the service has always begun with the hymn Once in Royal Davids City. The original service was adapted from an Order drawn up by E.W. Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for use on Christmas Eve 1880.
The Nine Lessons and Carols service was first organized at Hallgrímskirkja in 1984, in collaboration with the British Embassy and community, after having been organized in previous years at the Cathedral. Until 2018 the service was organized in annual rotation by the British, Canadian and U.S. embassies and communities. From 2019 the service is organized by Hallgrímskirkja but with the support of the three embassies.
